(Senior Coordinator) Doug has just begun a term as our Senior Coordinator (our name for leaders). He is married to Deirdre and has four children, most of whom have flown the coup. Before retiring early a few years ago Doug was a surgical consultant in Whiteabbey Hospital. He hails from Devon, studied at Queen's university and is a dedicated member of St Anne's Parish in South Belfast.
Desmond is married to Cathy and together they have four children. He is one of Charis' founder members and is currently President of the Sword of the Spirit in this region. The Sword of the Spirit is a world-wide association of Christian communities. (See the page on the Sword of the Spirit.) Alongside his community responsibilities Des is the manager of a large local solicitors firm.
Doug is from Ohio originally but has been living in South Belfast with the Servants of the Word (a worldwide, ecumenical religious order) for 25 years. During this period he has been a leading member of Charis whose fulltime employment has been as the director of Youth Initiatives. Gary stood down last year as Senior Coordinator of Charis after two terms of four years each and is currently on sabbatical. Gary is married to Mandy and has three children. He is an active member of the Church of Ireland in South Belfast as well as being a teacher in Lagan College. Also confirmed this year as a coordinator in Charis, Gerard holds down a position as an RE teacher at St Mary's Catholic Grammar School in Magherafelt. Gerard is married to Bernadette and they have six children, two girls and four boys. In the early days of Charis Gerard was our sole musician – now we have teams of musicians! Gerard and his family are members of Our Lady Queen of Peace parish in West Belfast.
Florence is the main Women's Leader in our community. She is married to Maurice. Florence is also a parishioner of St Anne's Parish and Maurice is a member of Church of the Resurrection, Church of Ireland.
Mandy is married to Gary and they have three grown up children. She is a an art lecturer in Belfast Metropolitan College and has been a member of the women's leaders' team for 15 years. Mandy and her family are members of to the Church of the Resurrection, Church of Ireland in the Queen's area of Belfast.
Elaine is a single woman who works as the Childrens'Services Coordinator for Cruse Bereavement Care. Her responsibilities in Charis include pastoral care for young women and speaking at meetings and events. She hails from the USA but has lived in Belfast with Charis for 20 years. Elaine has been a member of the womens' leaders team for 9 years.
Breda is from Dublin and relocated to Belfast more than 25 years ago when she married Francis. They have four children who are scattered between America, Dublin and Belfast. Among other things Breda looks after the finances of Charis. Breda and family are parishioners of St Anne's Parish, Belfast.
